This is a family of hyaenas that we found in the Kruger Park just before nightfall. The female is still suckling the pups. They were about 15 to 20 feet away from us; quite unprecedented by our experience and we are seasoned Park veterans despite now living in the UK. We visited them the following night too - have a look at my other vids too see more of the pups.

A Hyaena mother calls her tiny cubs she left safely in the den all day. The little black cub is only weeks old as it's mother goes into the den to call the other cubs. It's unusual for adults to go into dens. The dens are there for cub's safety and not for adults to take refuge in. The little cub gets mom's full attention.

We had found the hyaena den the day before and I made a mental note of its location. The following day I was able to pinpoint it on the map and we were there just as they started to emerge from their den - which I had inadvertently parked on top of!

The vultures and jackal have overnight moved the zebra foal carcass into the open on the airstrip. They've been spotted. The hyaena sees them off. The skin and bone remains, no more of a meal for any scavenger, are a meal for the hyaena. It makes off with the carcass watched by giraffe.

The beauty of an African dawn belies the goings on of last night. Spotted hyaenas are feeding on the rotten remains of a hippo carcass on the shores of Malilangwe dam. The hippo probably died fighting with a territorial bull. A high ranking female is not interested in feeding with a male hyaena. He eventually gets to feed when she moves off.

I'm not sure how the giraffe died but the hyaena couldn't care as he crunches bone and chews through the half inch thick hide. A cheeky vulture nearly loses his life as he sneaks in for a scrap. Others wait and when the hyaena moves off they pile in en masse. But their glory is shortlived when the hyaena panics them into flight.

Some footage of an excellent sighting in the Serengeti NP: two leopards, two hyaena, vervet monkeys alarm calling and a herd of elephant passing in the background...
