Once the lions had left a 'clean' buffalo carcass the hyaenas took over. And at first light hordes of vultures descended on the scene but they had little chance as the hyaenas sent them scattering. The vrultures nearly won the day with sheer numbers but the game was on and the hyaenas were having fun.

This is all that remains of the hippo carcass from last night. it's inch thick hide that no other animals can chew through. But hyaenas were invented with this role in mind. With their carnassial shears they're able to cut through the skin. Although hard work, the skins rich protein makes it worthwhile.

The matriarch is feeding, the second hyaena is keeping the third one on a distance. The fourth animal is on the look-out.

Four hyaenas discovered something killed by a leopard and stole it from her. If you recall my photos of the leopard, she was looking at these hyaenas and she was upset.
