The Expanding Geodesic Dome blossoms open from a 1.5-meter cluster to a 6-meter structural dome when pulled open from its base. When deployed it has the same shape and triangulated pattern as Buckminster Fuller's static, geodesic dome, taking this seminal historic structure into the 21st century.

Three kinetic shading units were created, each having a square plan that retracted into a slender profile. The shading surfaces are treated in transparent blue glass; the structural members are constructed of aircraft quality aluminum.
Installed in late 1999, the Expanding Sphere Constellation is the centerpiece of the Hall of Wonder--the first exhibit visitors see when entering the museum. The constellation consists of six expanding spheres that form a gracefully descending spiral. As they move, they create patterns and seem to communicate with one another.
Led by the Advanced Geometry Unit (AGU) of Ove Arup & Partners, Hoberman participated in an invited competition to design a new theatrical complex for the 2010 Expo in Shanghai, China.
