Ischia is a volcanic island in the Bay of Naples in Italy. The highest peak is volcanic Mount Epomeo, 788 meters high. In 1883, an earthquake destroyed the villages of Casamicciola Terme and Lacco Ameno. Ischia is reached by ferry from Naples. One famous resident of Ischia was the English composer William Walton.
When Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D., the Roman city of Pompeii was buried under cinders and ash. When Pompeii was rediscovered in 1748, historians and artists were able to learn much morte about the lives and art of the Romans.
