If you love outdoor photography, and you’ve never visited any of the USA’s National Parks, then there’s a treasure trove of photo opportunities waiting for you. I took the one above in Zion National Park during early November, 2006. I haven’t been to many National Parks because I caught on to them too late in life; but the ones I’ve visited have provided me with all the “photo ops” I could have hoped for. Because of various medical problems, I haven’t been able to get to the better parts of many parks so I know there’s even more to be explored, a lot more. Now, Canon Digital Cameras is making a trip to a National Park even more inviting by giving you a chance to enter a digital photo you took in a National Park in their, “Photography In The Parks Photo Contest”, and win some great prizes. Here’s the link to the government’s National Parks website. Have fun and good luck, and remember to take a camera with you whenever possible. Look around, you’ll find a picture somewhere. Free Adobe “Photoshop Express” Graphics Program
If you ever wanted to try one of Adobe’s famed “Photoshop” graphics programs here’s your chance to test drive their latest “light” version. I have several versions of Adobe Photoshop that I got for free with various printers, scanners and other gizmos that have come and gone over the years and I have a full blown Photoshop program as well. The learning curve is steep, that’s for sure, even with some of the simpler versions, but the results are worth the effort. In any event all digital camera owners will want to manipulate their images to some degree so why not give as many graphics programs as possible a whirl, especially when the cost is zero. Check out this free Adobe Photoshop Express graphics program and take note of the 2 gigs of free online image storage they’re also offering. Take a camera with you whenever possible, and look around, you’ll find a picture somewhere. Source:www.images.macworld.com See full article. Digital Photography Is More Than Taking A Picture
Except for the most basic of snapshots most digital photographers realize that the creative process does not begin and end with the click of a shutter. With film, or “wet process” photography, after the film is exposed it has to be developed and then prints made from the negatives. This isn’t as straight forward as it sounds, if you do your own darkroom work, as I did. Unless you want “just a picture” there are many variables, too numerous to mention here, that go into dark room work, to produce a print that is more than just OK. As much as digital cameras changed and simplified photography, there is still some “post processing” to be done on your computer, if you want more than just an average image. As frustrating as some graphics programs can be, believe me, they’re a lot easier, neater, and less expensive than “wet process”, which also requires a separate room, in which you work in the dark. Olympus SP-560 UZ
I hate to keep saying it but the parade of ultra zoom digicams continues—at least it’s marching into my house via FedEx! Recently we tested the very good Panasonic DMC-FZ18, an 18x 8-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization. Olympus recently introduced an updated ultra zoom, the SP-560 UZ, also with a whopping 18x lens and 8MP resolution with sensor-shift stabilization. What both have in common is a very wide-angle setting; it’s 27mm on the Olympus versus 28mm for the FZ18. Although the pair is very close, they are much wider than the typical 35-38mm of other mega zooms such as those from Sony and Canon. The 8MP Fujifilm FinePix S8000fd–which we’ve asked for–also has an 18x zoom with a range of 27-486mm. Hey does this sound like a trend of more wide-angle digicams? As a matter of fact it is since we’ve learned other manufacturers will unveil them at the PMA convention at the end of January. While waiting for the S8000fd it was time to test the new Olympus. Here’s what we discovered… Read | Permalink | Email This | User Reviews | Linking Blogs
Pentax K200D
Pentax is the Rodney Dangerfield of camera companies—they just don’t get any respect. The fact they operate on a shoestring budget, have recently been taken over by lens-maker Hoya and have as much clout with your local mega-retailer as I do may have something to do with it. Many photographers made their bones with Pentax K series cameras (back in the film days) so there’s a bit of nostalgia for the brand. Most new shooters don’t know Pentax from Pampers. This is too bad because the company makes decent D-SLRs—forget their point-and-shoots since they’re light years behind Canon and Sony. With this sad tale on the counter, DigitalTrends was happy to receive Pentax’s new entry-level D-SLR, the 10.2-megapixel K200D which costs $799 USD with the basic 3x 18-55mm lens–about the going price for an introductory 2008 D-SLR. Yes you can get the older 8MP Canon Rebel XTi and 6MP Nikon D40 for less but why bother when you can a new one with higher resolution? And you know you won’t pay $799 USD—more like $725– for this kit since Pentax doesn’t have the cachet of the new 12MP Canon XSi, 10MP Nikon D60 or recently reviewed Sony DSLR-A350 . Let’s see if this one gets a little respect or not… Read | Permalink | Email This | User Reviews | Linking Blogs
Can You Be Arrested For Using Your Digital Camera In Public?
With terrorist related news being broadcast almost non-stop on TV it’s easy to understand why there’s an increased alertness towards suspicious activity of any kind. But what is “suspicious activity”, and who decides what should, and shouldn’t be allowed. There have always been locations where photography is prohibited, such as art museums, because electronic flashes can, over a long period of time, harm the paintings, or so I’m told. Other reasons include copyright infringement, privacy and religious reasons, but now we have situations where threats to security are the reason given. Since 9/11 I’ve been hassled twice, once while taking pictures of a particularly attractive courtyard outside a small bank building, and again while on the roof of the New York New York Casino parking garage here in Las Vegas. The first incident brought out the bank manager, who was extremely nervous and not very eager to get close to me. He showed visible signs of relief when I explained why I was taking the pictures and gave him my business card. After a few minutes he looked around and agreed that the courtyard was nice and that he had no eye for art. I assured him that when I hit the Lottery I would make a large deposit in his institution. As for the Casino incident, which yielded the above photo, I was told, by a bicycle riding security guard, that taking pictures of the “towers” was forbidden, due to security reasons. I was then figuratively thrown off the roof. I’m not a lawyer but my rule of thumb is that if I’m on private property, such as the bank or casino, the owners make the rules. If they say go, I go, because they have the rights to allow or disallow any type of activity on their property, I don’t. Here’s a rundown of what’s going on in America, England, and a few other places with regards to photography and suspicious activity. This link takes you to a website that has a listing of photographer’s rights in America. A simple search on Google will bring up photographer’s rights in other countries. Change Hair Color Using Photoshop
Here’s an interesting and thorough video tutorial for Adobe Photoshop users. This tutorial takes you through the steps necessary to change your subject’s hair color to any shade you want. Aside from the obvious fun you can have with this technique there is a practical use for it as well. If you’ve ever wanted to see what you would look like with a different hair color, such as chartreuse or plaid now you can do it at home without actually applying color to your hair. Hey guys, you may not want to let your lady catch you changing her hair color on your computer, she may get the wrong idea. See full article. Get Creative With A Bad Digital Photograph
Using a bad digital photograph to make something creative and artistic is an idea that I have plenty of raw material available to work with. Everyone takes a bad picture from time to time; in fact, some of us take more bad ones than good ones. Now I’m not referring pictures that didn’t quite capture exactly what you wanted; I’m talking about the real muffs, out of focus, badly over or under exposed, just plain bad. But before you give them the heave-ho try to think creatively, outside the box that is, and you just might be able to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. The picture above is a disaster; but check out this article and see what the photographer did to salvage a bad digital photograph using Photoshop. I think it’s pretty interesting and perhaps printing it on some rough artist’s watercolor paper would render it nicely. The only other thing I would have done would be to straighten the picture out so it’s level. Then again perfection isn’t the goal here. Take a camera with you whenever possible, and look around, you’ll find a picture somewhere. Source: digital-photography-school.com See full article. What Will The Digital Cameras Of The Near Future Be Like?
It’s always fun to speculate about the future; particularly when it doesn’t involve matters that are serious, such as retirement planning. I used to be an avid fisherman and I always had what was considered state of the art equipment. I haven’t fished in many years, for one reason or another, mostly poor health, but recently I took a look at some current gear and I was amazed at the technical advances that have been made. The same holds true for digital cameras. The cameras I salivated over a mere 5 years ago, but couldn’t afford, have been supplanted by far better ones that are smaller and much more affordable. If you’re impressed by what’s available now check out this article about what the near future holds for fans of digital photography.
