Many people, especially Americans, think that bigger is better, and many times that’s true, but not always. Bigger is better for bank account balances but not necessarily for diamonds for example. A smaller stone with fewer or only tiny flaws looks better and is more valuable than a large one with visible flaws. But many people are obsessed with numbers such as zoom lens ratios and these days the number of megapixels a digital camera’s sensor has. As I’ve said in past postings, there are other factors that determine the quality of a digital image besides the number of megapixels. Lens quality, the camera’s onboard firmware, and the quality of the camera’s digital sensor itself all contribute to the overall result. Several years ago a friend had her wedding professionally photographed by a pro who used a ten state of the art Canon Rebel 6 mp DSLR. The results were fabulous and looked as if the pictures were done with a mega bucks film camera such as a Leica or Hasselblad. Now, we have digital cameras that boast sensors upwards of 13 mp. In fact even I have 8.3 and 9.3 megapixel cameras, modestly prices ones. Does that mean that I would achieve better results than the pro did a few years ago? No, first off she’s a pro and knows how to get the most out of a given camera, so that’s a factor. See full article. “Picture Your World”, A Great Photography Blog
If you’re an honest person, and I believe I am, you cannot be afraid to tip your hat to persons who do what you do, but better. I found a photography blog that is authored by a highly accomplished young woman who has created some amazing images that I feel will provide inspiration for the rest of us. Sheba Wheeler, the blog’s owner, offers photo tips that are worth checking out, such as “wetting wood” before photographing it to bring out its subtle colors and textures. I wish I had thought of that before taking the above picture. Check out Ms. Wheeler’s blog and draw some inspiration from it and learn how to be a better digital photographer. Photoblog For Digital Photographers
Most photographers like showing their pictures to other people and displaying them in their homes and offices. Of course we shutterbugs are proud of our work, and we’re eager to have it critiqued by others, or are we? I was always happy when someone commented that, my “pictures looked like postcards”, and then, many years ago, I read in a photography magazine that if someone says that your pictures are common and not special. It bothered me for a while because it seemed to make sense. After all, postcards are supposed to document something in a purely technical way, they’re not supposed to be works of art. With that in mind I decided that the comparison between professionally done postcards and an amateur’s efforts is valid and it is complimentary. I say that because postcard photos generally are very well done at least in terms of technical factors such as exposure, focus, etc. So if someone feels that your photos could be used on postcards the observer is saying that they are correct technically. As far as subject matter and composition are concerned that’s where the creative aspect enters the mix and as is said, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. If you would like some critique of your photos, and the opportunity to comment on other photographer’s efforts then start a “Photoblog” and show off your masterpieces. Check out this article about digital photoblogs and then set one up. By the way, feel free to comment on any of the pictures in this blog that I took, such as todays and on the previous posting. All compliments will be graciously accepted and criticisms carefully considered. Take a camera with you whenever possible, and look around, you’ll find a picture somewhere. Shoot Some Fireworks With Your Digital Camera
Taking pictures of fireworks displays with film cameras was a tricky assignment and something greatly misunderstood by many amateurs. One would have thought that fast film and long telephoto lenses would do the trick, when actually the opposite is true, unless the display was a long distance off. Fireworks photos come out best when you’re up close and use short focal lengths, no more than 75mm equivalent, in my opinion. Of course with digital cameras most of the guesswork is taken out of the equation; especially if your camera has a “fireworks” setting or program. Check out these useful tips for taking great photos of great digital camera photos of fireworks. Source:www.selmanc.info.com See full article. Free Digital Photography Software You Need
Pretty much every digital photographer uses some form of at least basic digital photo software to edit and enhance their pictures. These programs, even the simple ones, allow us to work wonders on digital photos that might otherwise be consigned to digital nothingness via the “delete” button. But with so many programs to choose from which one is best for your needs, and how do you determine this without actually laying out some big bucks? The answer is simple, unless you really need or want something ultra sophisticated such as Adobe Photoshop, try out the free ones readily available online. This article provides details on some of the most popular digital photography software to get you started. Here’s one of the best free digital graphics programs around, “Irfanview”, and another I’ve used with good results, “Serif” digital photo imaging software, to get you started. If you want to sample more free imaging programs search around, and use Google, and you’ll soon have more than you can imagine. When you find one you really like you may decide to spend a few bucks on the full blown version. Take a camera with you whenever possible, and look around, you’ll find a picture somewhere.
