Sony develops back-illuminated CMOS sensor
Following Omnivision’s recent announcement, Sony today announces the development of a back-illuminated CMOS image sensor (five effective mega pixels, 60 frames/s) with significantly enhanced imaging poperties, including nearly twofold sensitivity and low noise. The new CMOS sensor achieves a signal-to-noise ratio of +8dB (+6dB sensitivity, -2dB noise) in comparison to existing Sony CMOS image sensors of the same pixel size. Sony will apply this technology in consumer digital video camcorders and digital still cameras…
Omnivision CMOS turns digital imaging upside-down
OmniVision has developed a radically different approach to traditional CMOS image sensor technology. Using backside illumination (BSI), the OmniBSI technology enables OmniVision to continue miniaturization of digital imaging technology. The methodology involves turning the sensor upside down so that it collects light through what was previously the backside of the sensor. Current front side illumination (FSI) sensors can block or deflect light from reaching the pixel, and this novel approach optimizes light absorption…
Magnet-controlled digital camera in the body
In collaboration with engineers from Given Imaging, the Israelite Hospital in Hamburg and the Royal Imperial College in London, researchers from the Fraunhofer Biomedical Engineering Institute have developed the first-ever control system for the camera pill. It can be done with tiny cameras which the patient has to swallow. In the past there was no way of controlling the device as it passed through the body. Now it can be steered and stopped where desired by a handheld magnetic control device. Of course, don’t try this at home…
Firmware version 1.20 for Ricoh R8 digital camera
Ricoh releases the first firmware update - version 1.20 - for the R8 digital camera. The model R8 was introduced in February of this year as successor to the Caplio R7, the last of the “Caplio” models. This new firmware update should improve the accuracy of exposure at continuous shooting with full-press…
